  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup shredded Swiss cheese or provolone cheese

Step 1: Prepare the Onions

Start by peeling and thinly slicing the onions. Yellow onions are best because they become sweet and flavorful when cooked slowly.

Try to slice the onions evenly so they cook at the same speed. The onions are one of the most important parts of this recipe because they create the classic French onion flavor.

Step 2: Sauté the Onions for Better Flavor

Although you can place raw onions directly into the crockpot, sautéing them first gives the dish a much deeper flavor.
