Deviled Ham Salad: A Classic Savory Spread with a Creamy, Tangy Twist
Deviled Ham Salad is a delicious old-fashioned recipe that transforms leftover ham into a flavorful, creamy spread perfect for sandwiches, crackers, wraps, or a light lunch. Made with finely chopped ham, crunchy vegetables, creamy dressing, and bold seasonings, this dish combines salty, smoky, tangy, and slightly spicy flavors in every bite.
This recipe is simple, affordable, and easy to prepare ahead of time. It is a great way to use leftover holiday ham, but it is also delicious when made with deli ham or freshly cooked ham. The longer it chills, the better the flavors blend together.
What Makes Deviled Ham Salad Special?
The word “deviled” refers to the addition of flavorful ingredients that give the dish a little extra kick. Traditional deviled ham salad often includes mustard, spices, pickles, and seasonings that enhance the natural smoky flavor of the ham.
Unlike regular ham salad, which is usually mild and creamy, deviled ham salad has a stronger personality. It combines:
- Salty diced ham
- Creamy mayonnaise
- Tangy mustard
- Sweet pickle relish
- Crunchy celery and onion
- A hint of spice
- Fresh herbs for balance
The result is a versatile spread that works for sandwiches, appetizers, or quick snacks.
Ingredients
For the Ham Salad
- 3 cups finely chopped cooked ham
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons yellow mustard or Dijon mustard
- 3 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
- ½ cup finely diced celery
- ¼ cup finely diced onion
- 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon onion powder
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- Salt, to taste
- 1–2 teaspoons hot sauce, optional
Optional Additions
- 2 tablespoons finely chopped dill pickles for extra tang
- 1 teaspoon pickle juice
- ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper for more heat
- 2 tablespoons chopped green onions
- ¼ cup finely chopped hard-boiled eggs for a richer version
- A small amount of cream cheese for extra creaminess
Step 1: Prepare the Ham
Start by removing any excess fat or tough pieces from the ham.
Cut the ham into smaller chunks, then finely chop it using a sharp knife or pulse it in a food processor.
The texture is important. You do not want the ham completely blended into a paste. Small pieces create a better bite and give the salad a more homemade texture.
For a smoother spread, process the ham longer. For a chunkier salad, chop it by hand.
Step 2: Prepare the Vegetables
Wash and finely chop the celery, onion, and parsley.
The celery adds a fresh crunch, while the onion gives a sharp savory flavor that balances the richness of the ham and mayonnaise.
If you prefer a milder onion taste, soak the chopped onion in cold water for 5–10 minutes, then drain before adding it.
