Ground Beef and Biscuit Bake: A Comforting One-Pan Dinner Recipe

Ground Beef and Biscuit Bake is a warm, hearty casserole that combines seasoned ground beef, savory vegetables, creamy sauce, melted cheese, and fluffy golden biscuits baked together into one satisfying meal.

This dish is the perfect example of simple comfort food. It has all the flavors people love about a homemade dinner: juicy beef, rich gravy-like filling, soft vegetables, and buttery biscuits that soak up the delicious sauce underneath. It is easy enough for a weeknight meal but also makes a great family dinner when you want something filling and cozy.

Why You Will Love This Recipe

This casserole is popular because it brings together two classic favorites: a flavorful beef filling and homemade-style biscuits. Instead of preparing separate side dishes, everything cooks together in one baking dish.

The bottom layer becomes rich and savory as the ground beef cooks with onions, garlic, and seasonings. The biscuit topping becomes golden on the outside while staying soft and tender inside. The melted cheese adds a creamy finish that ties all the flavors together.

It is also very customizable. You can add different vegetables, change the cheese, or make it spicy depending on your taste.

Ingredients

For the Ground Beef Filling

  • 1 ½ pounds ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter
  • 1 bell pepper, diced (optional)
  • 1 cup frozen peas and carrots
  • 1 cup corn kernels
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup (about 10.5 oz)
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning

For the Biscuit Topping

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup cold butter, cubed
  • ¾ cup cold milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

Optional Toppings

  • Extra shredded cheese
  • Fresh parsley
  • Green onions
  • Cracked black pepper

Step 1: Prepare the Baking Dish

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.

A casserole dish works best because it gives enough space for the beef filling and allows the biscuits to bake evenly.

Step 2: Cook the Ground Beef

Heat a large skillet over medium heat.

Add the olive oil or butter, then add the ground beef.

Break the meat apart with a wooden spoon and cook until it is browned and no longer pink.

This step creates the main flavor of the dish. Browning the beef allows it to develop a deeper, richer taste.

Once cooked, drain any excess grease from the pan.

Step 3: Add Onion and Garlic

Add the diced onion to the cooked beef.

Cook for about 3–4 minutes until the onion becomes soft and slightly translucent.

Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.

The onion adds sweetness, while the garlic gives the filling a warm, savory flavor.

Step 4: Season the Beef Mixture

Add:

  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Paprika
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Italian seasoning
  • Worcestershire sauce

Stir well so the seasonings coat the beef evenly.

The Worcestershire sauce adds a deep savory taste similar to a slow-cooked gravy.

Step 5: Add Vegetables and Sauce

Add the bell pepper, peas, carrots, and corn.

Stir everything together and cook for 2–3 minutes.

Then add:

  • Cream of mushroom soup
  • Beef broth
  • Tomato paste

Mix until everything is combined.

The sauce should become creamy and thick. If it looks too thick, add a little more broth.

Let the mixture simmer for about 5 minutes so the flavors combine.
