Ham and Cheese Crescent Bake: A Warm, Buttery Hot Ham & Swiss Puff Bake

Ham and Cheese Crescent Bake, also known as Hot Ham & Swiss Puff Bake, is a simple comfort-food dish made with flaky crescent dough, savory ham, melted Swiss cheese, and a buttery seasoned topping. It is golden on the outside, cheesy in the middle, and easy to slice into squares for breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, or party snacks.

This recipe is perfect when you want something quick but satisfying. It tastes like a warm ham and cheese sandwich wrapped in soft, buttery pastry. The crescent dough bakes into a flaky crust, the ham adds a salty smoky flavor, and the Swiss cheese melts into a creamy layer that holds everything together.

Why This Recipe Works

The beauty of this dish is its simplicity. Crescent roll dough creates an easy pastry base without needing homemade bread or puff pastry. The ham and cheese filling is classic, familiar, and family-friendly. A brushed butter topping adds extra flavor and helps the top turn golden brown.

It is also a flexible recipe. You can make it mild and simple, or add mustard, herbs, onions, garlic, or a honey-butter glaze for a richer taste.

Ingredients

For the Bake

  • 2 cans refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 12 to 16 slices deli ham
  • 8 to 10 slices Swiss cheese
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard or yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise, optional
  • 1 tablespoon honey, optional
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter for the pan

For the Butter Topping

  • 4 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • ½ teaspoon poppy seeds, optional
  • ½ teaspoon sesame seeds, optional
  • A pinch of black pepper

Step 1: Prepare the Baking Dish

Preheat the oven to 375°F / 190°C.

Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray. This prevents the bottom crescent layer from sticking and helps it brown nicely.

A glass or ceramic baking dish works well, but a metal pan can also be used. If using a metal pan, watch the bottom because it may brown faster.

Step 2: Prepare the Crescent Dough Base

Open one can of crescent roll dough.

Unroll the dough and place it in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Press the seams together with your fingers so the dough becomes one even sheet.

Try to spread it evenly across the bottom of the dish. If the dough tears, simply pinch it back together.

This bottom layer will become the soft, buttery crust that holds the ham and cheese filling.

Step 3: Add Mustard Sauce

In a small bowl, mix the mustard, mayonnaise, and honey if using.

Spread a thin layer of this mixture over the crescent dough base.

The mustard gives the bake a tangy flavor that balances the richness of the ham and cheese. The honey adds a small touch of sweetness, which works beautifully with salty ham.

Do not use too much sauce, because excess moisture can make the bottom crust soft.
