Ham and Cheese Pinwheel Rolls: A Savory, Golden, Easy-to-Make Snack

Ham and Cheese Pinwheel Rolls are warm, flaky, cheesy rolls made with soft dough or puff pastry, slices of ham, melted cheese, and a flavorful buttery topping. They are rolled into a spiral shape, sliced into rounds, and baked until golden brown. Each bite has layers of savory ham, gooey cheese, and tender bread or pastry.

These pinwheels are perfect for breakfast, brunch, lunch boxes, parties, game nights, holiday appetizers, or quick family snacks. They look impressive, but the method is very simple. You only need to layer, roll, slice, and bake.

Why Ham and Cheese Pinwheel Rolls Are So Popular

The best thing about this recipe is the combination of flavor and texture. The outside becomes golden and slightly crisp, while the inside stays soft and cheesy. The ham adds salty, smoky flavor, and the cheese melts into the layers, holding everything together.

They are also very flexible. You can make them with crescent roll dough, pizza dough, puff pastry, or homemade bread dough. You can keep the flavor classic with ham and cheddar, or add mustard, herbs, garlic butter, cream cheese, or spices for extra richness.

Ingredients

For the Pinwheel Rolls

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, crescent dough, or pizza dough
  • 8 to 10 slices deli ham
  • 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese, Swiss cheese, or mozzarella
  • 2 tablespoons cream cheese or mayonnaise, optional
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard or honey mustard
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon chopped parsley, optional

For the Butter Topping

  • 3 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon honey, optional
  • 1 teaspoon poppy seeds or sesame seeds, optional
  • 1 tablespoon chopped parsley

Step 1: Prepare the Dough

Start by placing your dough on a clean surface. If using puff pastry, let it thaw until it is soft enough to roll but still cold. If it becomes too warm, it may get sticky and difficult to handle.

Lightly flour the surface and roll the dough into a rectangle. Try to make the thickness even so the pinwheels bake evenly.

If using crescent dough, press the seams together so the filling does not leak out during baking.

Step 2: Add the Sauce Layer

Spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard or honey mustard over the dough. This adds flavor and keeps the rolls from tasting plain.

For a creamier version, mix cream cheese or mayonnaise with the mustard before spreading it. This creates a richer filling and helps the ham and cheese stick to the dough.

Do not add too much sauce, because too much moisture can make the rolls soggy.

Step 3: Layer the Ham

Place the ham slices evenly over the dough, slightly overlapping them.

Leave a small border around the edges. This makes it easier to seal the roll after rolling.

Use thin deli ham for the best texture. Thick ham can make the rolls harder to slice and may cause the filling to fall out.
