Hearty Hamburger Potato Casserole: A Comfort Food Classic

Instructions:

  1. Prep the Potatoes: Slice potatoes into ⅛-inch rounds and soak in water to prevent browning while you prepare the other components.

  2. Preheat: Set your oven to 350°F (177°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

  3. Cook the Beef: In a large skillet or Dutch oven, brown the ground beef with onions and garlic over medium-high heat. Break it up as it cooks, and drain off any excess grease.

  4. Make the Sauce: In a mixing bowl, combine the soup, half and half, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Stir until smooth.

  5. Layer: Drain the potatoes. Begin by layering a third of the potatoes in the baking dish, followed by a third of the beef mixture, ¾ cup of cheese, and a third of the sauce.

  6. Repeat: Add two more layers in the same order—potatoes, beef, cheese, sauce.

  7. Top it Off: For the final layer, add the remaining potatoes and beef, pour on the rest of the sauce, and sprinkle the remaining 1½ cups of cheese over the top.

  8. Bake: Cover tightly with foil and bake for 1 hour and 10 minutes. Remove the foil and bake uncovered for another 20 minutes until golden and bubbly.

  9. Let It Rest: Allow the casserole to cool for about 15 minutes before slicing. It’ll set up and become easier to serve (and eat without burning your tongue!).

Extra Tips:

  • You can prep the dish ahead of time and refrigerate until ready to bake.

  • Leaving the potato skins on adds a rustic texture—totally up to you!

  • Cooking times may vary depending on your oven. Keep an eye on it during the final 20 minutes.

Whether served at Sunday dinner, a family gathering, or a cozy weeknight meal, this Hamburger Potato Casserole is a dependable favorite. It’s simple, filling, and guaranteed to have everyone coming back for seconds.
