How to Check if Your Turmeric is Real or Fake at Home
With turmeric’s rising popularity, fake or adulterated turmeric has become increasingly common. Pure turmeric has significant health benefits, so it’s important to ensure you’re using the real thing. Here are some simple tests to try at home to check if your turmeric is pure or mixed with additives like starch, synthetic dyes, or fillers.
1. Water Test
An easy way to test turmeric powder for purity.
How to Do It: Add a teaspoon of turmeric powder to a glass of warm water. Stir gently and let it sit for 10-15 minutes.
What to Look For: Pure turmeric will settle at the bottom, leaving clear water on top. If the water turns cloudy or there’s a colored residue floating, it may contain artificial colors or fillers.
2. Paper Test
This test helps detect artificial color or chalk powder.
How to Do It: Rub a small pinch of turmeric powder on a plain white sheet of paper.
What to Look For: If the turmeric leaves a bright yellow stain that looks slightly oily, it’s likely pure. A powdery residue or an unnaturally bright or reddish stain could indicate artificial colors.
3. Alkali Test with Baking Soda
