Not all foods expire at the same rate. Here’s a breakdown of how long foods can safely be consumed past their printed dates (if stored properly and showing no signs of spoilage).
Canned Goods (Like Green Beans 😉)
✅ Safe for 1–5 Years Past Expiration Date (if unopened)
🚨 Toss If:
- The can is bulging, leaking, or rusted
- There’s a weird smell when opened
- The contents look discolored or moldy
👉 Pro Tip: If stored in a cool, dry place, canned goods can often last much longer than the printed date. However, high-acid foods like tomatoes or pineapple break down faster than low-acid foods like beans or corn.
Dry Pantry Items (Pasta, Rice, Flour, Cereal, etc.)
✅ Safe for 6 Months – Several Years (if dry and stored properly)
🚨 Toss If:
- There are bugs or weevils
- It smells musty or rancid
- It has turned clumpy (for flour or powders)
👉 Pro Tip: Keep dry goods in airtight containers to extend their shelf life.
Dairy Products (Milk, Cheese, Yogurt, Butter)
✅ Milk: 5–7 Days Past Date (if refrigerated and doesn’t smell sour)
✅ Cheese: Weeks to Months Past Date (hard cheeses last longer than soft ones)
✅ Yogurt: 1–3 Weeks Past Date (if it smells and looks normal)
🚨 Toss If:
- There’s mold on soft cheese or yogurt
- It smells sour or feels slimy
👉 Pro Tip: Hard cheeses like Parmesan can be cut around moldy spots and still be eaten. But if it’s soft cheese (like brie), throw it out.
Meat & Seafood
✅ Raw Meat: 1–2 Days Past Date (if kept cold and looks/smells fine)
✅ Cooked Meat: 3–5 Days in the Fridge
✅ Frozen Meat: 6–12 Months (quality degrades over time, but it’s still safe if kept frozen)
🚨 Toss If:
- It has a slimy texture
- It smells bad or rotten
- The color has turned grey or greenish
👉 Pro Tip: When in doubt, don’t risk it—spoiled meat can cause serious food poisoning.
Eggs
✅ Safe for 3–5 Weeks After Purchase (if refrigerated)
🚨 Toss If:
- It floats in water (a sign of aging)
- It smells bad when cracked open
👉 Pro Tip: Store eggs in their original carton in the coldest part of the fridge (not the door).
Frozen Foods
✅ Safe Indefinitely (if kept frozen at 0°F)
🚨 Toss If:
- It has heavy freezer burn (it’s still safe but won’t taste good)
- There are ice crystals inside the packaging
👉 Pro Tip: Frozen food is safe to eat for years, but the quality starts to decline after 6 months – 1 year for best taste.
How to Tell If Expired Food Is Safe to Eat
If you’re unsure whether to eat something past its date, use the SIGHT, SMELL, and TEXTURE test:
👀 Look at it → Is there mold, discoloration, or separation? Toss it.
👃 Smell it → Does it smell off, sour, or rotten? Toss it.
🤢 Feel it → Is it slimy, sticky, or mushy when it shouldn’t be? Toss it.
When in Doubt, Throw It Out
While some expired foods are safe to eat, others can be dangerous. Foodborne illness is no joke, and it’s better to be safe than sorry. If you ever question whether something is still good, trust your senses and err on the side of caution.
Would I have eaten my neighbor’s ancient can of green beans? Absolutely not. But if I found one in my own pantry that was only a few months past its “best by” date, I’d probably check it first before tossing it.
What about you? How long will you eat something after it’s expired? Let me know in the comments! 🤣👀
