The Ultimate 4-Ingredient Saltine Cracker Toffee Treat

A simple, addictive baked dessert that turns pantry basics into pure magic

If you’ve never transformed plain saltine crackers into a rich, caramelized dessert, you’re in for a surprise. This recipe is one of those “how is this even possible?” creations—using just four ingredients to produce a crunchy, buttery, chocolate-coated treat that tastes like something from a bakery.

Often called cracker toffee or Christmas crack, this dessert is incredibly easy to make and dangerously hard to stop eating. Let’s walk through it step by step so you can get it perfect on your first try.

Ingredients (Only 4!)

  • 1 sleeve of saltine crackers (about 35–40 crackers)
  • 1 cup (225g) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup (200g) brown sugar
  • 1½–2 cups chocolate chips (milk or semi-sweet)

Optional toppings: chopped nuts, sea salt, or crushed cookies

Equipment You’ll Need

  • Sheet pan (baking tray)
  • Parchment paper or aluminum foil
  • Saucepan
  • Spatula

Step-by-Step Method

1. Prepare the Base

Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).

Line your sheet pan with parchment paper or foil. Make sure it covers the edges—this gets sticky.

Lay the saltine crackers flat in a single layer, covering the entire tray. Keep them close together without overlapping.

2. Make the Caramel Toffee

In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and brown sugar together.

Stir constantly until the mixture starts to boil. Once it reaches a boil, let it cook for 3–4 minutes, stirring occasionally.

You’ll notice it thickens and becomes glossy—that’s your toffee forming.
