Slow Cooker Creamy Rice Pudding: A Comforting Step-by-Step Homemade Dessert

Slow Cooker Creamy Rice Pudding is a warm, rich, and comforting dessert made with simple pantry ingredients. It combines rice, milk, sugar, vanilla, and warm spices into a soft, creamy pudding that cooks slowly until thick and tender. The slow cooker makes the process easy because it gently cooks the rice without needing constant attention.

This recipe is perfect for family desserts, holiday gatherings, cozy evenings, or meal prep. It can be served warm for a soft and comforting treat, or chilled for a thicker, custard-like dessert.

What Makes Slow Cooker Rice Pudding Special?

Traditional rice pudding often needs stirring on the stovetop to prevent sticking or burning. The slow cooker makes the method easier by using low, steady heat. This allows the rice to absorb the milk slowly, creating a creamy texture without much effort.

The result is a pudding that is soft, sweet, and full of vanilla flavor. A little cinnamon or nutmeg gives it warmth, while butter and cream make it extra rich.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 cup uncooked long-grain white rice
  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Optional Add-Ins

  • ½ cup raisins
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 beaten egg, for a richer custard-style pudding
  • Extra milk for thinning before serving

Optional Toppings

  • Ground cinnamon
  • Whipped cream
  • Chopped nuts
  • Caramel sauce
  • Fresh berries
  • Toasted coconut

Step 1: Rinse the Rice

Place the rice in a fine-mesh strainer and rinse it under cold water for about 30 seconds.

This removes excess starch from the surface of the rice. It helps prevent the pudding from becoming overly gummy while still allowing it to become creamy.

After rinsing, drain the rice well.

Step 2: Grease the Slow Cooker

Lightly grease the inside of the slow cooker with butter or non-stick cooking spray.

This helps prevent the milk and rice from sticking to the sides as they cook.

A 3-quart to 5-quart slow cooker works well for this recipe.

Step 3: Add the Ingredients

Add the rinsed rice to the slow cooker.

Pour in the milk and heavy cream. Add the sugar, butter, cinnamon, and salt.

Stir everything together until the sugar begins to dissolve and the rice is evenly spread across the bottom.

Do not add the vanilla extract yet if you want the strongest vanilla flavor. Adding it near the end keeps the flavor fresh and fragrant.
