Southern Sweet Potato Casserole

Instructions

1. Prep the Oven & Dish

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

2. Make the Sweet Potato Base

  • In a large bowl, combine mashed sweet potatoes, brown sugar, half-and-half, softened butter, egg, vanilla, and salt.

  • Beat until smooth and creamy.

3. Assemble the Casserole

  • Spread the sweet potato mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish.

4. Prepare the Topping

  • In a small bowl, mix together brown sugar, flour, pecans, and melted butter until crumbly.

  • Sprinkle the topping evenly over the sweet potato layer.

5. Bake

  • Bake for 35 minutes, or until the topping is golden and crisp.

  • Allow to cool for at least 20 minutes before serving.

Tips for the Perfect Casserole

  • For extra flavor, roast the sweet potatoes instead of boiling—they’ll be naturally sweeter.

  • Make ahead: Assemble the casserole and topping, cover, and refrigerate overnight. Bake the next day.

  • Add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the sweet potato mixture for a warm, festive touch.

This casserole is a Thanksgiving must-have—rich, creamy, and perfectly balanced with a nutty, crunchy topping. 🥄
