Caramel Drizzled Chex Mix: The Ultimate Sweet and Salty Crunch Snack

There is something irresistible about a snack that combines crisp cereal, salty pretzels, crunchy nuts, and a buttery caramel coating. Caramel Drizzled Chex Mix takes that classic sweet-and-salty combination and turns it into an easy homemade treat that’s perfect for movie nights, parties, holidays, lunchboxes, or simply keeping on the counter when a crunchy snack craving hits.

The best part is how simple it is to customize. You can use your favorite Chex-style cereal, add different nuts, throw in pretzels, and finish everything with a generous caramel drizzle. Once the caramel cools, it forms little sweet clusters throughout the mixture, giving every handful a combination of textures and flavors.

Why You’ll Love This Caramel Chex Mix

This recipe is especially appealing because it doesn’t require complicated baking techniques. The cereal and other crunchy ingredients are simply combined, coated, and baked until the caramel becomes beautifully glossy and crisp.

You’ll get:

  • Crunchy cereal with a light, crisp texture
  • Salty pretzels that balance the sweetness
  • Toasty nuts for extra flavor and texture
  • Buttery caramel that ties everything together
  • A snack that’s easy to make ahead
  • Plenty of opportunities to customize the mix

It also makes a wonderful homemade gift. Pack cooled Chex Mix into clear treat bags or small containers, tie them with ribbon, and you have an inexpensive edible gift for friends and family.

Ingredients

For the Crunchy Mix

  • 4 cups Chex-style cereal
  • 2 cups mini pretzels
  • 1 cup salted peanuts or mixed nuts
  • 1 cup crunchy snack crackers, optional
  • ½ cup roasted pecans, optional

For the Caramel Coating

  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • ¼ cup light corn syrup
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda

For the Finishing Drizzle

  • ½ cup caramel sauce
  • ¼ teaspoon sea salt, optional

You don’t have to use every optional ingredient. The basic combination of cereal, pretzels, nuts, and caramel is delicious on its own.

How to Make Caramel Drizzled Chex Mix

Step 1: Prepare the Baking Sheet

Begin by preheating your oven to 250°F (120°C).

Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. This makes cleanup considerably easier and prevents the caramel-coated pieces from sticking directly to the pan.

If you don’t have one large baking sheet, divide the mixture between two smaller pans. It’s important not to pack everything into a very deep layer because the caramel needs to reach as much of the snack mixture as possible.

Step 2: Build the Crunchy Base

Add the Chex-style cereal, pretzels, peanuts, and any optional nuts or crackers to a very large mixing bowl.

Gently toss everything together.

Try not to crush the cereal as you mix. Using a large spoon or spatula and folding the ingredients from the bottom upward helps keep the cereal pieces intact.

At this stage, you should already have a nice combination of shapes and textures. The cereal provides the light crunch, while pretzels and nuts bring a more substantial bite.

Step 3: Make the Caramel

Place the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat.

Once the butter has melted, add the brown sugar, corn syrup, and salt.

Stir continuously until the mixture comes together and begins to bubble.

Once bubbling, allow it to cook for approximately 3–4 minutes, stirring frequently. The mixture should become smooth and glossy.

Remove the saucepan from the heat and immediately stir in the vanilla extract.

Finally, add the baking soda and stir carefully. The caramel will foam slightly when the baking soda is incorporated, so give yourself plenty of room in the saucepan.

Why add baking soda?

The small amount of baking soda helps make the caramel coating lighter and easier to distribute. It also helps prevent the finished snack from becoming excessively hard once it cools.
