Slow Cooker French Onion Potatoes: A Cozy, Savory Side Dish Made Step by Step

Slow Cooker French Onion Potatoes are a rich, comforting potato dish made with tender sliced potatoes, sweet onion flavor, melted butter, herbs, broth, and a deep savory French onion-style seasoning. The potatoes cook slowly until they become soft, flavorful, and almost creamy, while the onion mixture gives them a warm, slightly sweet, deeply seasoned taste.

This recipe is perfect as a side dish for roasted chicken, grilled steak, baked ham, meatloaf, pork chops, sausages, or holiday dinners. It is also easy enough for a weeknight meal because the slow cooker does most of the work.

What Makes French Onion Potatoes Special?

The flavor comes from the classic taste of French onion soup: onions, butter, broth, herbs, and savory seasoning. Instead of serving that flavor as soup, this recipe lets the potatoes absorb it slowly.

As the potatoes cook, they soak up the onion broth and become tender. The butter adds richness, the cheese melts into the top if you choose to add it, and the onions give the dish a deep homemade flavor.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 2 ½ pounds potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 packet French onion soup mix
  • 1 cup beef broth or chicken broth
  • ½ cup sour cream or heavy cream, optional
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • ½ teaspoon paprika, optional
  • Salt to taste

Optional Topping

  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese, Swiss cheese, mozzarella, or cheddar
  • 2 tablespoons chopped parsley
  • Crispy fried onions
  • Extra black pepper

Step 1: Choose the Right Potatoes

For this recipe, Yukon gold potatoes are one of the best choices because they become tender and buttery without falling apart too much. Russet potatoes also work well if you want a softer, creamier texture.

Wash the potatoes well. You can peel them if you want a smoother dish, or leave the skins on for a more rustic style.

Slice the potatoes into thin rounds, about ¼ inch thick. Try to keep the slices even so they cook at the same speed.

Step 2: Prepare the Onion

Peel the onion and slice it thinly.

The onion is very important because it gives the dish its French onion flavor. Thin slices cook down better and blend nicely with the potatoes.

For deeper flavor, you can quickly sauté the onion in a pan with olive oil for 5 to 7 minutes before adding it to the slow cooker. This step is optional, but it makes the onion sweeter and richer.

Step 3: Grease the Slow Cooker

Lightly grease the inside of the slow cooker with butter, oil, or cooking spray.

This helps prevent the potatoes from sticking to the bottom and makes cleanup easier.

A 4-quart to 6-quart slow cooker works well for this recipe.
